The theme this week has been pumpkins. We have weighed, measured, compared, read about and studied the life cycle of pumpkins. Everyone is a pumpkin expert. Monday we will cook with pumpkins!
In Artists/Writers Workshop we have been exploring how shapes are used in art and how we can use shapes in our own drawing. We have also been talking about how good writers get ideas for their stories. The children are quick to say "from other people and from pictures". We are also talking about how we can tell stories through words and pictures.
I am enjoying watching the children in room 1 begin to show a huge interest in more structured games. It is typical of children at this age to start to understand the idea of rules, turn taking and of course the whole idea of "winner and loser" (all in a friendly non-competative way). Favorite games at school are concentration games with pictures, letters, numbers and even "muscle words", as well as simple board games. So many reading, math and social skills are learned through games. I encourage you to try a family game night at home.
