Thank you to Jaime (Mila's mom) and Viviana and Sean (Isabella's mom and dad) who are our room parents. They took on a last minute project of decorating our door for Edgewood's Centennial Celebration. Check it out- It's wonderful!! Other pictures are of children learning to "read with with a friend". Ask your child what EEKK means when reading with a friend! I have finished the literacy assessments which are required in the beginning of the year. Results from the assessments allows me to individualize reading instruction. When asked at closing meeting what was something they learned Mila said "I learned to read"- I guess my job is done!
As some of you already know I am a firm believer in the Responsive Classroom . I spend much of the first 6 weeks of school building classroom community and establishing rules, routines and logical consequences. This time spent in the beginning pays off big time as the year unfolds and the children are able to assume more and more responsibility for their learning. I have already seen the benefits of the community building activities we do daily. Children are kind and thoughtful. They are peacemakers and problem solvers. I encourage everyone to read about Responsive Classroom at www.responsiveclassroom.org
I will end with another quote. This time from Barbara Stern, principal at The Darcy School in Cheshire. She came with 5 of her teachers to learn about how to implement morning meeting in their classrooms. "We truly did see the magic in the room- thanks for opening up your classroom to us. We were all very moved by what we saw- a community created in 16 days where everyone is valued, everyone participates, and children are motivated to do their very best learning every moment. Can’t wait to see them again in January!"
